The Eterra Vortex Excavator Stump Grinder puts a high-torque, direct-drive stump grinder on an excavator, giving you the reach and positioning of the excavator boom to attack stumps from above, on slopes, over obstacles, and in areas that can be difficult to reach with a skid steer or dedicated grinder.
Available with 27″ and 31″ cutting wheels, the Vortex uses a radial piston motor, oil-bath direct-drive hub, and 12 replaceable cutting teeth to turn hydraulic power into serious grinding performance. With configurations for 18–30 GPM or 30–45 GPM, it can be matched to a wide range of excavators up to 20,000 lbs.
Features:
- High-Torque Grinding Power: A radial piston motor and integrated drive system are designed to put the excavator’s hydraulic power directly into the cutting wheel instead of wasting it through a complicated drivetrain. Eterra states the system converts nearly 95% of hydraulic energy into horsepower.
- Excellent View of the Cutting Wheel: The asymmetrical wheel design gives the operator a clearer look at the cutting area, making it easier to place the grinder exactly where you want it.
- Built for Difficult Stump Locations: Using an excavator as the carrier makes the Vortex especially useful for stumps on slopes, behind obstacles, along banks, and other locations where machine positioning can be the hardest part of the job.
- Low-Maintenance Direct Drive: The enclosed oil-bath hub eliminates external couplers and the need for constant drive-system greasing.
- Protected Cutting System: Rock guards and abrasion-resistant wear plates help protect the cutting components when you’re grinding below grade and inevitably getting into dirt and surrounding material.
- Replaceable Cutting Teeth: The Vortex uses replaceable teeth so worn cutting components can be serviced without replacing the wheel.
- Better Chip Control: An elongated rubber chip guard helps absorb debris impacts and reduces chip buildup around the grinder.

What’s the advantage of putting a stump grinder on an excavator?
Reach and positioning. Instead of needing to drive directly up to every stump, you can use the excavator boom to position the cutting wheel. That can be a major advantage around slopes, ditches, structures, landscaping, and other obstacles.
What’s the difference between the 27″ and 31″ Vortex?
The biggest difference is the hydraulic requirement and cutting capacity. The 27″ model runs on 18–30 GPM and grinds 18″ below grade. The 31″ requires 30–45 GPM and reaches 20″ below grade.
What size excavator can run the Vortex?
Eterra rates both models for excavators up to 20,000 lbs. Hydraulic flow is just as important as machine weight when determining which Vortex model is appropriate.
Does the Vortex use belts or external drive couplers?
No. It uses a direct-drive system with an enclosed oil-bath hub, eliminating external couplers and the associated routine greasing.
How deep can it grind?
The 27″ model reaches 18″ below ground, while the 31″ model reaches 20″ below ground.
Are the cutting teeth replaceable?
Yes. Both models use 12 replaceable cutting teeth along with rock guards and abrasion-resistant wear plates.
Which model should I choose?
Start with your excavator’s auxiliary hydraulic flow. Machines producing 18–30 GPM match the 27″ Vortex, while machines producing 30–45 GPM can run the larger 31″ model. Then verify machine weight, hydraulic pressure, coupler, and mounting requirements before ordering.

Eterra Attachments are backed by a limited manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser.
- Structural components and hydraulic cylinders are typically covered for 1 year under normal use
- Gearboxes and drive components are covered, with wear items (such as seals) considered maintenance after the initial period
- Warranty applies to properly operated and maintained equipment within recommended hydraulic and usage specifications
This warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, improper installation, normal wear and tear, or operation outside of rated capacities.
All warranty claims are handled through Echo Equipment, where you’ll work directly with our team to get issues resolved quickly without the runaround.
Use the Reach of Your Excavator
Bring the grinder to the stump instead of fighting to position the entire machine directly beside it. The excavator boom gives you excellent control on slopes, banks, around structures, and across uneven terrain.
Direct Drive Means Less Maintenance
The oil-bath enclosed hub eliminates external drive couplers and constant greasing, keeping the drive system simple and reducing routine maintenance.
Two Models for Different Hydraulic Systems
Choose the 27″ model for machines producing 18–30 GPM or step up to the 31″ model for 30–45 GPM hydraulic systems.
Grind Well Below Ground Level
Once the stump is gone, keep grinding below grade so the area can be backfilled, landscaped, or prepared for whatever comes next.
- Tree services removing stumps after tree removal
- Land clearing contractors
- Excavation and site-prep contractors
- Stumps located on slopes and embankments
- Fence line and right-of-way clearing
- Residential and commercial property cleanup
- Forestry and acreage maintenance
- Jobs where excavator reach makes stump access easier
