The Eterra Excavator Auger Drive gives mini and compact excavators a heavy-duty planetary drilling system for fence posts, footings, tree planting, utility work, and general earth drilling. Its reinforced gearbox and large thrust plate are designed to prevent shaft pullout while delivering smooth, consistent torque through a standard 2″ hex output shaft.
Three drive models let you match the auger to your excavator’s hydraulic flow, with up to 3,350 ft-lbs of torque and support for auger bits up to 36″ in diameter.
Features:
- Planetary Drive System: Spreads torque across multiple gears for smooth power transfer and reduced stress on individual drivetrain components.
- Designed to Prevent Shaft Pullout: A reinforced gearbox and large thrust plate address one of the common failure points found in conventional auger drives.
- Built for Tough Ground: High-torque models give excavator operators the digging power needed for demanding soil conditions and larger-diameter holes.
- Great for Fence & Utility Crews: Quickly switch the excavator from digging and trenching to drilling posts, poles, footings, and other holes without bringing another carrier to the job.
- Standard 2″ Hex Connection: Makes the drive compatible with a broad range of auger bits, extensions, and drilling accessories.
- Go Deeper With Extensions: Compatible extensions give you the ability to drill substantially deeper when standard auger length isn’t enough. Eterra offers fixed and telescoping 2″ hex extensions.
- Multiple Drive Options: Select the drive based on the excavator’s available hydraulic flow and the torque required for the work you’re doing.

Which auger drive should I choose?
Start with your excavator’s auxiliary hydraulic flow. The 2500 covers 7–17 GPM, the 3500 covers 10–25 GPM, and the 4500 covers 13–30 GPM. From there, consider the hole diameter and how much torque you need for your ground conditions.
What’s the advantage of the planetary drive?
The planetary gearbox distributes torque across multiple gears instead of concentrating the load on a single gear set. Eterra uses this design to provide smoother power transfer while reducing stress on critical components.
What does Eterra mean by preventing shaft pullout?
Eterra designed the gearbox and thrust plate to keep the output shaft secured under heavy drilling loads. This addresses a failure Eterra identifies with older auger-drive designs where the shaft can pull out of the gearbox.
How large of a hole can I drill?
The 2500 is rated for bits up to 30″, while the 3500 and 4500 can run bits up to 36″.
Can I drill deeper than the auger bit itself?
Yes. Eterra offers 2″ hex auger extensions, including fixed extensions and a telescopic version reaching up to 72″.
What auger bits can I use?
All three drives use a standard 2″ hex output shaft. Eterra’s earth auger lineup includes diameters from 4″ through 36″, although the maximum allowable bit diameter still depends on which drive model you’re running.
Why put an auger on an excavator instead of a skid steer?
The excavator boom gives you excellent positioning and reach, particularly when drilling along slopes, banks, fence lines, or around existing structures. It also lets an excavation crew drill holes using a machine that’s already on the job.

Eterra Attachments are backed by a limited manufacturer warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for the original purchaser.
- Structural components and hydraulic cylinders are typically covered for 1 year under normal use
- Gearboxes and drive components are covered, with wear items (such as seals) considered maintenance after the initial period
- Warranty applies to properly operated and maintained equipment within recommended hydraulic and usage specifications
This warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse, improper installation, normal wear and tear, or operation outside of rated capacities.
All warranty claims are handled through Echo Equipment, where you’ll work directly with our team to get issues resolved quickly without the runaround.
Put Your Excavator’s Reach to Work
Drill on slopes, along fence lines, around obstacles, and in locations where the excavator’s boom gives you better positioning than a skid steer-mounted auger.
Choose the Drive That Matches Your Machine
Three hydraulic configurations make it easier to match the auger drive to the excavator instead of trying to make one motor work across a huge flow range.
One Drive, Multiple Ways to Use It
Pair the drive with earth augers, extensions, and other compatible 2″ hex accessories to tackle more than basic post holes.
- Fence and gate installation
- Pole and post holes
- Deck and footing installation
- Tree and shrub planting
- Utility contractors
- Landscaping and irrigation
- Farm and ranch work
- Construction and site preparation
- Deep drilling with auger extensions
