The BrushHound FHX66 Defender Skid Steer Forestry Mulcher is built for serious land clearing with a skid steer, cutting dense brush, vines, saplings, and trees up to 10″. Its 54″ cutting width keeps the head maneuverable in wooded areas while a heavy 12.75″ cutter drum and 36 Quadco knives process material into mulch instead of simply knocking it down.
The FHX66 can operate with as little as 17 GPM, giving standard-flow skid steers access to forestry-mulching capability without requiring a dedicated high-flow machine. An adjustable tree bumper helps control standing material, while the Hardox 400 liner, timed-belt drive, adjustable ejection door, and integrated pressure gauge are built around demanding clearing work.

What can the FHX66 Defender cut?
The FHX66 is designed for grass, vines, dense brush, saplings, and trees. Maximum published capacity is up to 10″ intermittently, with a 6″ continuous cutting capacity.
Can the FHX66 run on a standard-flow skid steer?
Yes. The hydraulic range starts at 17 GPM, allowing the FHX66 to work with properly equipped standard-flow skid steers as well as higher-flow machines.
What is the difference between the gear motor and piston motor?
The standard gear motor is an efficient direct-drive setup and is the standard configuration for the FHX66. It is a good fit for machines operating within the attachment’s standard hydraulic range. The optional 5,000-PSI piston motor is more efficient at converting hydraulic flow into usable cutting power, and is the better overall motor for demanding applications. High-flow skid steers should be configured with the piston motor.
What hydraulic pressure does it require?
The current FHX66 brochure specifies 3,350 PSI. The carrier must also have a case drain.
What operator protection is required?
The skid steer must be equipped with 1/2″ Lexan/polycarbonate or equivalent front protection and falling-object protection before operating the FHX66.
What is the standard cutting system?
The standard configuration uses 36 Quadco 2″ Quad Tooth knives. Each one-piece alloy knife can be rotated through four cutting positions before replacement.
What is the difference between the available knife types?
The FHX66 can be configured with four different knife styles depending on how you plan to use the mulcher.
- Quad / Beaver Tooth: Four-pointed steel tooth with cutting points on multiple sides. Produces the finest chips/mulch of the available options. The teeth may wear faster than the heavier carbide options, but they can be rotated to expose fresh cutting points.
- Planer / Chipper Style: The most productive option for taking down trees quickly. It processes wood aggressively, and still leaves a good mulch finish, though not as fine as the Quad / Beaver Tooth. The teeth are also rotatable as the cutting edges wear.
- Carbide: Better suited to rough or rocky terrain where occasional ground contact is more likely. A good choice for backdragging and clearing areas where protecting the cutting teeth from rocks and abrasive material is important.
- Hammer / Double Carbide: The most durable option. For extremely rocky terrain, and especially abrasive clearing conditions.
What does the adjustable tree bumper do?
The bumper contacts standing brush and trees ahead of the cutter, helping guide material into the mulching head while keeping it controlled during the cut.
What does the adjustable ejection door do?
It changes how material exits the mulching chamber, giving the operator more control over discharge and how thoroughly material is processed.
What is the advantage of the Hardox 400 liner?
The wear-resistant liner protects the inside of the housing from the abrasion and impact created by wood, brush, and debris moving through the mulching chamber.
Is a piston motor available?
Yes. A 5,000-PSI piston motor upgrade is available in place of the standard gear motor.
Note: The FHX66 weighs 2,300 Lbs. and requires 17–50 GPM, approximately 3,350 PSI, a case drain, universal skid steer mounting, and the required forestry operator protection. Exact hydraulic configuration and machine capacity must be verified before ordering. High-flow or pressure options may be required on some machines.

Bring Forestry Mulching to a Skid Steer
With hydraulic requirements starting at 17 GPM, the FHX66 gives properly equipped skid steers a way to handle substantial brush and tree-clearing work without requiring a dedicated forestry carrier.
Turn Heavy Growth Into Mulch
The large cutter drum and Quadco knives process vegetation as they cut, reducing brush, saplings, and trees into smaller material that can remain on the site.
Control Standing Material
The adjustable tree bumper helps push and guide taller brush and trees toward the cutter, giving the operator more control as material enters the mulching head.
