Product Overview
Description
The ECHO SSCW 48" Excavator Single Compaction Wheel is the Utility Contractor Special. It is built for contractors who need to backfill and properly compact narrow trenches without constantly switching between a bucket and a separate compactor.
The oversized 48" diameter wheel is what sets it apart from almost every other compaction wheel on the market. Most compactors are too small to reach the bottom of a deeper utility trench before the frame or side plates make contact with the trench walls. The ECHO SSCW is designed so the wheel reaches the bottom first, allowing operators to compact trenches up to approximately 2 ft deep from the bottom up.
That makes it a strong fit for water lines, fiber, conduit, drainage, irrigation, pipe installation, and utility repair work. The non-powered design uses excavator downforce and rolling action to break up clods, remove air gaps, and compact material as the operator moves down the trench.
Features
- 48" Oversized Wheel: Reaches deeper into utility trenches than most traditional compaction wheels.
- Full-Depth Compaction: Designed so the wheel contacts the bottom before the side plates reach the trench walls.
- Single-Wheel Design: Scrapes material into the trench and compacts it in one continuous process.
- Non-Powered Operation: Uses excavator downforce and rolling action with no hydraulic motor required.
- Narrow Trench Focus: Built for utility trenches where plate compactors and smaller wheels can struggle.
- Excavator Pin-On Mount: Mount is matched to the excavator for a proper fit.
Benefits
Utility Contractor Special
Built specifically for narrow utility trenches where proper backfill and compaction matter, but traditional compactors struggle to reach.
Compacts Up to 2 Ft Deep
The 48" wheel reaches the bottom of trenches up to approximately 24" deep before the frame contacts the trench walls.
Backfill and Compact With One Attachment
Pull material into the trench and compact it with the same tool, reducing attachment changes and keeping the excavator moving.
Bottom-Up Compaction
Breaks up clods and removes air gaps lower in the trench to help reduce settling, washouts, and future repair work.
Ideal For
- Utility contractors installing water lines, fiber, conduit, cable, and underground pipe.
- Excavation crews handling trench backfill, drainage, irrigation, and stormwater work.
- Municipal crews repairing utility cuts, water lines, ditches, and infrastructure.
- Contractors working in narrow trenches where plate compactors cannot reach effectively.

FAQs
What makes the 48" SSCW different from most compaction wheels?
Most compaction wheels are too small to properly reach the bottom of deeper utility trenches. The oversized 48" wheel is designed to compact up to approximately 2 ft deep before the frame contacts the trench walls.
Why does the 48" wheel matter?
A larger wheel reaches deeper into the trench and applies force where it matters. That helps compact the lower layers instead of only packing material near the surface.
Can it backfill and compact with the same attachment?
Yes. The single-wheel design lets operators scrape soil into the trench and compact it without switching between a bucket and compactor.
Does it require hydraulics?
No. The SSCW is non-powered and uses excavator downforce and rolling action for compaction.
How is this different from a plate compactor?
Plate compactors often struggle to reach the bottom of narrow trenches. The 48" SSCW is made to compact from the bottom up in deeper utility trench applications.
What excavator size does it fit?
This excavator version can be built for machines from approximately 6,000 to 30,000+ lbs. Final fitment depends on the excavator, coupler, pin dimensions, trench width, and application.
What jobs is it best for?
It is especially useful for water lines, electrical conduit, fiber, communications, irrigation, drainage, pipe installation, and utility repair work.
