Product Overview
Description
The ECHO SSCW Single Compaction Wheel " The Utility Contractor Special" is designed to efficiently backfill and compact utility trenches using a skid steer or compatible machine. Built specifically for narrow trench work, this attachment allows operators to scrape soil back into the trench and compact it with the same tool, eliminating the need to switch attachments during the job.
Ideal for utility contractors and excavation crews, the SSCW makes it possible to properly pack trenches that are difficult to reach with traditional compactors. Whether installing water lines, fiber optic cable, or electrical conduit, this compaction wheel helps ensure trenches are properly backfilled and compacted for long-term stability.
Features
- Large 48" diameter wheel allows true compaction in trenches up to ~2 ft deep
- Designed so the wheel reaches the bottom before side plates contact trench walls
- Single wheel design backfills and compacts in one pass without switching attachments
- Breaks up clods and removes air gaps by compacting from the bottom up
- Ideal for narrow utility trenches where plate compactors can’t reach effectively
- Available in multiple sizes to match trench width and job requirements
- Non-powered design uses machine weight for consistent, reliable compaction
Benefits
Backfill and Compact With One Attachment
The wheel design allows operators to scrape soil into the trench and compact it without changing attachments, improving jobsite efficiency.
Perfect for Narrow Utility Trenches
Designed specifically for tight trench applications where traditional compactors struggle to reach.
Improves Soil Compaction Quality
Proper trench compaction helps prevent settling, washouts, and future repairs.
Utility Contractor Friendly
Built with trenching contractors in mind, making it easier to properly pack trenches after installation of underground utilities.
Ideal For
- Utility trench backfilling
- Water line installation
- Fiber optic and communication lines
- Electrical conduit installation
- Drain tile and irrigation work

FAQs
What makes this different from most compaction wheels?
Most compaction wheels are too small to reach the bottom of deeper trenches, while the 48" wheel is designed to compact up to ~2 ft deep before the frame contacts the trench.
Why does wheel diameter matter for trench compaction?
Larger diameter wheels reach deeper into the trench and apply force where it matters, instead of compacting only the top layer.
Can this actually compact a full trench depth?
Yes, the 48" model is specifically designed so the wheel contacts the bottom before the sides hit, allowing full-depth compaction.
How is this better than a plate compactor?
Plate compactors struggle in narrow trenches and only compact from the top, while this works from the bottom up for more consistent results.
Can I backfill and compact at the same time?
Yes, the wheel allows you to pull material into the trench and compact it in one continuous process.
Does this require hydraulics?
No, this is a non-powered attachment that uses the weight and downforce of your machine.
Who is this built for?
This is designed for utility contractors who need proper trench compaction without slowing down or switching equipment.
